Free handyman invoice template
Hourly, half-day or per-task โ with materials shown honestly and a minimum that doesn't need explaining.
A handyman day is six small jobs, and the invoice is where they either look like six jobs or like one vague number. List them: mounted the TV, patched the drywall, rehung the door, installed the grab bar. It takes two minutes and it is the single biggest thing separating a handyman who gets rehired from one who gets haggled. Put your minimum charge on there as a stated line, show materials with your markup policy, and bill the dump run if you made one.

What to include on a handyman invoice
- Your business name, phone number and email โ and your license number if your state puts one on the paperwork
- The customer's name, the service address, and a phone number or email you can actually reach them on
- An invoice number and the date the work was done
- Every task you completed, as its own line โ not 'handyman services'
- Your minimum charge or first-hour rate, stated as a line rather than implied
- Hours worked and the rate, if any part of the day was hourly
- Materials, and whether they're at cost, cost plus a stated markup, or reimbursed with receipts
- The dump run or disposal fee if you hauled anything away
- Anything you looked at and recommended but didn't do today โ that's next month's work
- Subtotal, sales tax if you charge it, and the total due
- Any deposit or payment already taken, and the balance still owed
- The due date, and what happens if it goes past it
- How they can pay โ card, bank transfer, check or cash
Handyman invoicing questions
Should I bill hourly or per task?
Per task wins on small, predictable jobs because the customer knows the number before you start and you keep the upside for being quick. Hourly is safer on old houses and anything behind a wall. Plenty of handymen do both on the same invoice, and that's fine as long as each line says which it is.
How do I explain a minimum charge?
Put it on the invoice as 'minimum service charge โ first hour' and mention it when you book. A twenty-minute job that costs $95 feels wrong until it's labeled, at which point it's obviously the price of getting a person and a truck to your house.
What markup on materials is normal?
Ten to twenty percent is typical and it covers your time sourcing, the fuel and the fact that you eat the cost when something's wrong. State your policy on the invoice โ 'materials at cost plus 15%' โ and you'll rarely be asked about it again. Whichever way you do it, be consistent.
Do I need a license to work as a handyman?
Most states set a dollar threshold above which a job needs a licensed contractor, and specialty work like electrical, plumbing and gas usually needs a licensed trade regardless. Check your own state once. If you are licensed or insured, that belongs in the invoice header โ it's a selling point most handymen leave off.
How do I ask for payment without it being awkward?
Hand them the invoice at the end of the job and let them tap a link. Nothing about that is a conversation. Asking for a check while you pack up your tools is a conversation, and it's the one that ends with 'I'll mail it'.
Is there a catch to it being free?
Not really. The free plan has no invoice limit and does not expire; what you pay for, if you ever do, is the handful of things that cost us money each time โ receipt scanning, our-domain email, your logo, more people on the account โ from $9.99 a month. Otherwise the money we make is 0.5% of a payment when a customer pays you by card. If they hand you cash, we make nothing and that is fine.
